October 6, 2017 – November 24, 2017

The AAAC is proud to host Perceptions, an exhibit highlighting the artists of Open Hearts Art Center from October 6 – November 24, 2017 in the Hall Gallery. This exhibit offers the viewer a peek into the mind of an artist living with a disability.

Open Hearts Art Center is a nationally accredited, community based arts program.  They provide unique opportunities for differently abled adults to contribute and add value to their world. Through innovative and stimulating forms of expression, Open Hearts has witnessed firsthand, how individuals begin to define themselves using words like “skilled”, “talented”, and “gifted”. Their everyday goal is to redirect the focus from what the participant artists are unable to accomplish and instead emphasize their many and vast abilities. Seeing inherent value in each individual’s artwork as an avenue for self-growth, Open Hearts emphasizes the visual arts. Their staff encourages daily reflection on each participant artist’s rich history and personal story as a source of inspiration for their work.  Only a small amount of day programs for adults with intellectual disabilities are offered in the Western North Carolina area, and none that focused solely on the arts as a therapeutic approach. Open Hearts has been a one of a kind program for the members of our community for over 10 years.
