May 10 - June 21
The Asheville Area Arts Council welcomes, Beyond Knowing, a new exhibit by curator, David Sheldon, into the AAAC Exhibition Space, May 10 – June 21, 2019.
Beyond Knowing features works by established and emerging artists that use art making as a means of exploring larger questions, such as “Who am I?”, Why am I here?” and “Where am I headed?”. The paths and mediums of choice are varied, but there is a common thread in the desire to go beyond one’s comfort zone and to extend one’s own limits of understanding.
The ability to go beyond those limits might be a the results of years of practice and attainment of knowledge by the artists, or the ability to do so might be the result of a natural tendency in an artist – a constant urge to go beyond one’s own limits. Another might reach a point at which the only option for going further seems to be a “letting go” and branching directly into new territory with as open a mind and heart as possible. The resulting work has a rich and provocative vitality – not necessarily providing easy answers to the aforementioned questions. In fact, the work might provoke more questions than answers. There is an inherent quality in the work that stimulates and provides an opening, perhaps, for the viewer to begin and sustain their own search Beyond Knowing.
Join us on Friday, June 7, 2019, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Asheville Area Arts Council’s large Exhibition Space to celebrate Beyond Knowing. Artist talk will begin at 6:30 pm.
