My North Carolina
January 5 - March 2
My North Carolina, a hall exhibit by the Fourth Graders of Claxton Elementary.
The fourth grade students at Claxton Elementary explored ways in which artists’ share their personal view and identity through the medium of collage. Fourth grade visual art classes included various artists from North Carolina in their focus. Specifically, students were inspired by the work of collage artist Romare Bearden. For further connection to our state, student collages were created on wooden North Carolina shaped plaques.
Bearden’s collages were viewed and students discussed recognizable themes such as place and community comprised of family and friends. Students also noticed how personal interests such as hobbies and activities can be shared by including details about an individual in the artwork. Observing theses collage construction methods expanded student understanding of the possibilities for creating their own self-portraits in the medium. Students were then encouraged to explore their own sense of self through creating a collage on the wooden plaques. Like the work of fellow North Carolinian, Romare Bearden, their collages show each student’s unique perspective and identity through place, community and preferences.
