Join us on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 from 3:00 – 5:00pm, for a FREE tax and bookkeeping workshop for musicians, artists, and other creative professionals, presented by CPAs from the Asheville accounting firm of Brian C. Hunter, CPA, P.A. in collaboration with the Asheville Area Arts Council and Asheville Music Professionals.
Topics will include: income tax preparation and forms, getting all the available deductions, bookkeeping and record keeping, tax planning, tax structures (LLCs, and corporations), estimated taxes, crowdfunding and taxes, sales taxes, 1099s, etc. Also, the CPAs will be discussing new topics including a big federal tax act and a Supreme Court decision requiring internet retailers, including sellers of art, crafts and music recordings, to collect sales tax for the state to which the goods are shipped. ALL musicians and artists are welcome, from beginners to established pros.
About the presenters:
Brian C. Hunter‘s areas of practice include tax and financial planning for individuals, businesses, estates and trusts, management consulting for small businesses and professional practices, and supervision of tax return preparation. By personal choice, Brian has developed concentrations in:
- Tax credits for rehabilitation of historic buildings.
- Conservation easements on real estate, which limit development rights and other uses as a means to protect water quality, farm and forest land preservation, scenic views, wildlife habitat, outdoor recreation, and historic preservation.
- Services for creative professionals such as musicians, artists, composers and authors.
Karen Praytor is a CPA with more than 25 years of experience working with corporations, partnerships, fiduciaries, and individuals. She has a strong background in taxation and small business issues of all kinds, and enjoys working one-on-one with clients in tax planning and troubleshooting software and workflow problems. Karen grew up in Australia, attending the University of Adelaide, then Brevard College, and finally finishing up her Bachelor of Science Degree here in Asheville at UNCA. She was lucky enough to travel extensively in her past and always has a long list of places she’d like to visit in the future. Karen has served on the board of Asheville Greenworks and is currently on the board of the Asheville Art Museum.
Karina Escalante was born and raised in Guatemala and moved to the Asheville area with her family in 2005. Karina’s background in accounting began during her high school years, when she started working as bookkeeper in 2007. She then received her Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of NC at Asheville and her Master of Accountancy from Western Carolina University. She recently received her CPA certification in 2017. Karina has over four years of experience with individual and business tax preparation. She also enjoys working with small businesses and helping them with accounting system setup and troubleshooting. Karina is an avid rock climber and enjoys spending her leisure time in the mountains.
Stephen Kimmel is resident of Asheville since 2015, Stephen was born and raised in Mississippi. He completed both his Bachelor in Accountancy and Master in Business Administration at Mississippi State University. Stephen has been preparing taxes and working in accounting since 2010. He recently received his CPA license in 2016. An avid backpacker and whitewater enthusiast, Stephen chose to settle in the Asheville area for its close proximity to all things outdoors. Stephen is also a member of the Haywood Community College Accounting Advisory Committee.
