Winged Narratives: A Social Study
December 7, 2018 - January 25, 2019
Contemporary Primitive Narrative Paintings by Cleaster Cotton
“Birds are relatable, social creatures and are among the most numerous organisms on the planet earth. We can learn a great deal about ourselves from observing their behavior in nature. “Winged Narratives: A Social Study” is dedicated to the preservation of natural creatures and their environments.” ~ Cleaster Cotton
In this exhibition, Cotton presents whimsical caricatures of birds with body language depicting their relationship to each other and their place in time and space. Employing her signature tools – color, texture, light and movement – Cotton investigates introspection and how we relate in nature and society as humans, as individuals, as partners… in relationship to family, community, nation and race. Cleaster provides a seamless segue to fanciful places and intimate spaces, where her narratives unfold, in this collection of one heart-warming, humorous painting after another.
Responses and reactions to the expressive body language of the charismatic characters in this contemporary primitive collection of mixed media figurative paintings, propels this exhibit into an interactive smorgasbord of dialogue between people who, otherwise, may not have exchanged two words between them. This is an opportunity to participate in conversations with people from all walks of life about individuality, relationships and circumstances of the past, present and offers a peek into the future of the human family.
