On September 29, 2016 from 5:00 – 8:00 pm, The Asheville Area Arts Council (AAAC) will host the Grand Opening of The Refinery Creator Space, located at 207 Coxe Avenue on the South Slope of Asheville’s downtown.  The event will feature the unveiling of Asheville’s newest mural Bower Power created by artist Lara Nguyen of Stone Cloud Studio, who teaches in the art department at Warren Wilson College. Technical assistance for the mural is being provided by artist Ian Wilkinson.About the Grand Opening:Join us on Thursday, September 29 from 5:00-8:00 pm for a celebration of The Refinery Creator Space! The event is free and open to the public. Light fare will be offered and alcoholic drinks will be available to purchase with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the Asheville Area Arts Council.

About the Mural:

“The Bowerbird attracts a mate by creating an elaborate nest, but what sets them apart is that they collect and compose an array of found objects that are sorted by color to initiate a courtship. As artists we also need to initiate and nurture relationships with other artists, as well as, our audience. My concept for The Refinery Creator Space façade includes the depiction of an array of Bowerbirds and an arrangement of painted objects that are related to processes in the arts.” –Lara Nguyen

About the Artist:

Lara Nguyen is an artist who currently teaches at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, North Carolina. She was born and raised in Fort Wayne, Indiana and is the eldest of five children. Nguyen holds a BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design where she graduated Magna Cum Laude and was named the 1998 Outstanding Senior in Fine Arts. She received her MFA from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 2002. While attending SIUC on a full tuition scholarship she was awarded the SIUC’s Joint Women’s Studies and Women’s Professional Advancement Grant. Upon graduation she was hired as an Assistant Professor and Foundation Coordinator at California State University, Long Beach where she taught until 2006. From 2006 to 2012 she taught at the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts at Indiana University, Bloomington. Nguyen has exhibited nationally in Alabama, California, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tennessee and internationally in Canada, Japan, Korea, Paraguay and Scotland.

About The Refinery Creator Space:

The Refinery Creator Space is a place for artists and non-profits to collaborate, cooperate, and grow.  Along with housing the AAAC’s operations, the 15,000 square foot facility is home to ten individual artist entrepreneurs and five community organizations; AshevilleDarkroom, Asheville Makers, Local Cloth, Mechanical Eye Microcinema, Nick Moen’s The Bright Angle Ceramics Studio. Their presence in The Refinery will help us foster collaboration, innovation, and provide resources and tools for the greater Asheville community. The public is invited to get acquainted with this new resource and find out more about The Refinery, the host organizations and artists it houses, and to become a part of this collaborative community of creators.
