The Asheville Area Arts Council’s Emerald Ball was a success that exceeded expectations!  The Board of Directors and staff want to thank sponsors, donors, artists & performers, volunteers, and everyone who attended for making this annual fundraiser a success!  The financial success of the Emerald Ball was far greater than anticipated, and revenues generated represent an increase of over 800% from last year’s ball!

With the funds raised we are now able to reach a couple of our goals.  For the last two years, we have been working with the North Carolina State Arts Council to be reinstated as the designated county funding partner for Buncombe County.  Part of our to-do list to become eligible was to garner matching funds for the Grassroots Grant, which benefits arts organizations in Buncombe County.  We will be submitting our application for that role in the new year!  And we are very excited to announce, with the funds raised, the part-time Operations Manager will now be a full-time position starting in November!  All of this means we are positioned to bring great programs, services, and arts advocacy to Buncombe County for what will be an amazing year in 2014!

The Emerald Ball was held at Pink Dog Creative, former home of the Asheville Area Arts Council as well as a variety of great art studios and restaurants were transformed into the Emerald City, the capital of OZ from L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of OZ. To expand the event from last years’ scope, a live auction was added in addition to the silent auction.  The night’s entertainment included a fashion installation of human statues featuring local designers, performance from Dr. Sketchy’s, fire dancing by Found World Bellydance, dance performance with Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance, Oz installations by Jameid Ferrin, tarot card readings by special guest Professora Marvel.

All proceeds benefited the Asheville Area Arts Council’s programs and mission to strengthen the vitality and visibility of the creative community, and grow Buncombe County’s arts, culture, and entertainment. Programs include supporting Kids Tixx, where the AAAC provides tickets to one child and one adult to attend various arts events in the Asheville area, and the AAAC’s Artist’s Curriculum, providing area artists with resources and opportunities to build upon their business skills.

“I’m so incredibly excited to be hosting this year’s Color Ball, the Emerald Ball, in Pink Dog Creative. It is a special experience to be able to revel in the heart of the art, as the Pink Dog is a significant example of the power of creativity to build community, neighborhood identity, and the economy. Having our event in the AAAC Gallery, Randy Shull’s studio, and the affiliated spaces in the RAD will immerse our guests in the vibrant power of the arts that they are supporting by attending the ball and helping us raise the funds we need to grow Buncombe County’s arts, culture, and entertainment.”

-Kitty Love, Executive Director of the Asheville Area Arts Council
