The Asheville Area Arts Council is excited to announce its 2018 Juried Members Exhibit, February 23 – March 30, 2018. Cash prizes for best in show and two honorable mentions will be selected by juror Candace Reilly. Entries will be accepted December 11, 2017 – January 12, 2018.  The winners will be announced at the opening reception on Friday, March 2, 2018.  

All artists participating in the Juried Member’s Exhibit must have a current membership. Annual individual memberships are $35 and must be purchased before the submission.


Candace Reilly is the assistant director and curator at Blue Spiral 1 gallery in Asheville, NC.  She has a BFA in art history from St Mary’s College, University of Notre Dame and an MFA from Savannah College of Art and Design. In the past, she has worked in museums, curated in galleries, taught art history, and volunteered for numerous non-profits. A career advocate for the arts, Candace believes that successful communities, like Asheville, are those which are enriched by passionate and active artists. 


  • $25 application fee to submit up to 3 works.
  • Works will be juried by digital image only.
  • Entries must be original and created within the last 2 years.
  • All types of artwork (visual, craft, 2D, 3D, etc.) will be accepted.
  • Each member can submit up to 3 pieces for consideration.
  • Work cannot have been exhibited at the AAAC or Refinery in the past.
  • 2D work must be framed, mounted, and wired for hanging. All other work must be installation ready.
  • Size requirement: must fit through standard 8ft doorway and not exceed 75 lbs.

Packing and Transportation

Accepted work must be dropped off at the Refinery Creator Space on Tuesday, February 20 and Wednesday, February 21, 2018 between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm.

The works must be packed with appropriate materials designed to give maximum protection to the object(s) and will be repacked in the same or similar materials as received unless otherwise authorized by the Lender. Pack artwork securely in reusable containers with reusable packing materials. We prefer that all framed works use Plexiglas. Any artworks incorporating breakable elements should be double boxed and/or shipped in wooden crates. Please include any installation instructions needed for the safe handling and return of your work.

Any unsold artwork may be picked up on Monday, April 2, 2017 from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Care of Objects and Installation:

Professional gallery staff from The Asheville Area Arts Council will handle the unpacking, packing, transport, and installation of the object(s). The object(s) will be maintained in the condition in which it was received from the Lender. If any changes in the condition of the object(s) are noted during the time frame of this loan the Lender will be contacted without delay.

The object(s) borrowed will be given special care at all times to ensure against loss, damage or deterioration. No object will be altered, cleaned or repaired without the written permission of the Lender. If damage should occur while on exhibit at The Refinery, the Exhibitions Manager will notify the Lender immediately.


Artwork may be considered available for purchase while on exhibit. The Asheville Area Arts Council requires a 35% commission on any artwork sold through the gallery. All sold objects must remain with the exhibition for its duration and will not be forwarded to the purchaser until the end of the loan period. Payments for all sold pieces will be made within 30 days of the exhibit’s closing. Shipment of all sold object(s) will be paid by the purchaser.

Reproduction and Credit:

The object(s) will be labeled and credited to the Lender. Unless otherwise stipulated in writing by the Lender, the visiting public may take impromptu photographs, but no other reproduction is permitted except photographic copies for publicity uses related to the stated purpose of the loan. No images may be taken for commercial purposes without permission from the artist.
