The Asheville Area Arts Council, in partnership with Buncombe County Artist, Douglas Lail, is proud to serve as the fiscal sponsor of The “Hello My Name Is…” Project!
“Hello My Name Is…” is a not-for-profit community outreach program to break through the social stigma of addiction by focusing on the positive impact of recovery, in the lives of individuals, their families and our community. The work itself is a collection of portraits and personal recovery stories of people recovering from alcohol, drugs, mental health and other life challenges. These original portraits and stories are NOT FOR SALE, nor is there a fee to participate in the program.
A professional artist since 2007, Lail began concentrating on portraits in 2014. The idea for this project grew out of Lail’s own recovery experience and his desire to address social issues through his work.
“My mission with this project is to paint the light that I see in the mirror as well as the light I see in the people in recovery around me.” – Douglas Lail
The portraits for the HMNI project are created using basic charcoal white on black paper. This medium was chosen to align the work with the overall concept of the project – emerging from the darkness of addiction into the light of recovery. The participants reinforce this concept as they step out of the shadows and reveal themselves to the world as people of recovery.
Another key aspect of the project is the participants are given a voice, which is heard through the personal recovery story that accompanies each portrait. This handwritten story is an opportunity for the individual to speak about their experiences, to discuss where their strength lies and to personally share their hope and joy of recovery with the world.
